They say April showers bring May flowers, but we look forward to April for another reason: to remind people about Oral Cancer Awareness Month!
If you’re young, healthy, and don’t smoke cigarettes or chew tobacco, you’re probably thinking there’s little chance of getting oral cancer.
Today, young, healthy, non-smokers/non-tobacco users are the ones getting diagnosed with oral cancer – and at an alarming rate! That’s why we’re here to remind adults of all ages to have regular screenings.
More than 8,000 people die each year from oral cancer – that’s one person per hour every hour of every day.
The good news? Oral cancer has an 80 to 90 percent survival rate – but only if it’s detected in its early stages.
The bad news? The majority of oral cancers (particularly types caused by HPV) are not detected until the cancer is in late stages and many people do not survive. Check out some of the signs and symptoms of oral cancer:
If you want to avoid oral cancer, it’s as easy as practicing good oral hygiene and getting screened regularly.
Your dentist is trained to identify abnormalities in the mouth, which could be signs of oral cancer.
At Bedminster Dental, we screen patients as part of our routine dental cleaning appointments. And if you’re worried that it will be painful or uncomfortable, rest assured you can sit back and relax. We’ll simply check the inside of your mouth for red or white patches, mouth sores, as well as check for lumps or other abnormalities.
If there are any areas of concern, we will take the necessary steps to send a sample to our lab for further test. You can count on our team to do everything we can to identify this disease as soon as possible so we can increase your chances of survival.
So… open wide, say “ahhh” and get screened today!
