Summer is coming up and it’s usually pretty easy to find activities for your kids when the sun is bright and shining. But when it’s raining, you can easily get a case of cabin fever cramped in the house with kids who are getting bored.
If you’re looking for something fun and educational, why not try these dental themed rainy day activities? These activities can help your child have fun, stay entertained, while also learning lessons that will help them for years to come with their oral health.
Young children especially love imaginative play. It’s common for them to “play” at school or at being a doctor or any one of dozens of other careers. Playing dress-up as a dentist is a great way to help your child overcome fear of the dentist while also having fun. There are many kits on the market with oversized dental instruments and kid-sized lab coats or you can put one together yourself.
Break out the Play-Doh
Believe it or not, one of your old favorite toys can help your child pretend to be a dentist and practice brushing teeth. Play-Doh has a dental playset that lets your child mold teeth, place them in a toy mouth, and then brush them, fill their cavities, or pull them if they become too damaged.
Do a science experiment
This one will take a few days but it’s a great way to show your children what sugar will do to your teeth over time. First, boil a few eggs. (This is also a great way to get your kids interested in helping in the kitchen.) Then, fill three cups—one with water, one with soda, and one with diet soda—and place the eggs inside the cups. Wait a day to see how the eggs have changed. Then give your child a toothbrush and see if he or she can “brush” the stains off the eggs. This will show them how their teeth can be affected if they don’t brush properly.
Another great idea for pre-schoolers is to break out the construction paper. Have your child draw a tooth (or trace a pattern from the Internet) onto a piece of construction paper. Then give them a toothbrush and toothpaste and let them go to town brushing the tooth. This will keep them entertained and help show them how to actually brush their own teeth.
Read a book
It’s impossible to measure the immense value of reading to your young children. So take time to pick out a book about dentistry. Bear’s Loose Tooth is one of our favorites and it can be read over and over again to help emphasize how important dental health is.
