Halloween is less than a week away! We are sure that you’re excited for the chance to stock up on sweet goodies, but your dentist, isn’t as excited! Halloween doesn’t have to be completely bad news for your teeth as there are plenty of treats to not only consume, but hand out this holiday that would provide a much better alternative to the sugary candies that will rot those chompers away! We will go through the different categories of which candy is the “best” and “worst” options for your pearly whites.
Worst Options: The absolute worst candy options are typically taffy or any candy filled with coconut or caramel. They might not seem so bad, but the issue is the texture. The sticky candies will cling to every part of your mouth and easily get in-between the teeth. This makes it much more difficult to simply brush away. The longer a candy stays stuck to your teeth, the longer it has to begin creating cavities.
Slightly better, and we mean JUST slightly, are hard candies or lollipops. Again, the sugars involved do not dissolve easily and can be working against you for an extended period of time. The high acidic content of sour candies can break down tooth enamel and make you much more susceptible to cavities.
Better Options: Consuming chocolate, that does not contain a sticky filling, is one of the “better” options for your teeth. They generally do not stick to the teeth so there isn’t as large of an opportunity for tooth decay to take place. The best option remains sugar-free gum. There is nothing stick left behind and they are usually sweetened with a natural sugar. These natural sugars work for you and plaque has a difficult time penetrating and leading to cavities.
