It seems like with all the DIY dental products coming out these days, dentists are going to be out of business! There’s home whitening kits, fluoride paste, hydroflossers, kits for fixing crowns and fillings. What’s next??
I’ll tell you what’s next, because it’s already here. The home dental drill. Yes, that’s correct. They’ve made a home dental drill. The product is aptly named the DentiDrill. It looks like a standard electronic toothbrush, yet it’s anything but that. It’s a fully functional dentist drill to be used at home.
Just take a look at the company’s promotion of this fine, what-could-possibly-go-wrong product:
“Perfect for all ages, the DentiDrill is fast, safe – and easy to use. Your whole family will love it! For most families these days, dental care has become too expensive. Even when you`ve got extra dental coverage! People are fed up with rising insurance costs and declining coverage. You can try to avoid costly dental procedures with regular flossing and brushing. But that`s not always enough to keep cavities away.”
Too Good to be True?
If you’re questioning whether or not this is real just go to their facebook page…and you’ll find out that, yes, thank goodness, this product is a hoax. Being a dentist, this product—if it were real—would be deeply disturbing. When it first appeared, it seemed like it had to be a joke. But then it started appearing on multiple blogs as a legitimate DIY dental instrument.
Then finally the truth was revealed, as stated by the “product’s” facebook page: “Ok guys! Some of you were right! The DentiDrill isn’t real. However, the Dutch company ixorg (for affordable dental care) is!”
In reality it is/was part of a viral campaign for this company ixorg. It’s a company (forgive me if I’m incorrect because their website is all in Dutch) that seems to be a sort of dental insurance that allows for a highly customizable plan. GreyPOSSIBLE Amsterdam created the marketing campaign, which certainly has raised awareness of the ixorg brand.
Like the U.S., the Netherlands too have many people who go without dental insurance due to high premiums. Ixorg proposes itself to be an alternative to traditional insurance by avoiding fixed plans. Instead ixorg’s approach is allowing for the customer to combine building their own dental expenditure budget with a “low cost calamity insurance.”
Upon finding this out, a swell of relief washed over this writer. Whitening and fixing your own fillings is one thing. Taking a high powered piece of metal alloy, spinning at over 400,000 rpm, to you or your child’s mouth without years of training is quite another. So we can now rest easy knowing that the DentiDrill was just a shocking, yet brilliant marketing ploy.
