I was very happy with my porcelain veneers. I’ve had them about a year. However, last month I went in for a standard dental cleaning. Ever since then, my veneers have started picking up stains. I was told these would last much longer. Do you know what is going on?

You’re right, porcelain veneers last significantly longer than that. I suspect that your dental hygienist damaged your porcelain veneers during your appointment. Maybe she didn’t know you had veneers in, or maybe she just didn’t know how to treat them. Either way, I’m guessing she used some power polishing equipment, such as prophy jet.
Prophy jet can remove the glazing that is on your veneers, which is what caused them to pick up stains. It’s possible to repair them, but it requires advanced technique using diamond polishing paste. If your dentist hasn’t educated his hygienists on how to clean porcelain veneers, he may not even know the technique. If he isn’t immediately familiar with it, don’t let him learn on you. Instead, you’ll need to go to a more advanced cosmetic dentist and have your veneers repaired.
