I chipped a tooth. I want to repair it. My dentist suggested porcelain veneers, but when I saw the price tag, my eyes bugged out. It seems like a lot of money for a chipped tooth. Is this the standard treatment?

Lucy,
Absolutely NOT. This is a major overtreatment. If you were to say that you were unhappy with other facets of your smile–like their shape, size, or color, then I would say that porcelain veneers are a great idea.
They’re the treatment that gives you a total smile makeover. That doesn’t sound like what you’re after. To just repair a small chip, dental bonding is generally the standard treatment.
It is a lot less expensive than porcelain veneers. You should be aware it doesn’t last as long and will need to be redone in a few years, but I’d still recommend that over porcelain veneers for you unless there are other things you would like to change in your smile.
