I’ve had some dental bonding done, but I’m not too pleased with it. The bonding was intended to close a gap, but I don’t think it looks that great. Is this my only option?

No, you have other options. If you’re looking for a more permanent cosmetic solution, I would suggest porcelain veneers. While dental bonding lasts just a few years, porcelain veneers will last around 20 years. However, if your dentist cannot get your dental bonding too look right, then I don’t think you’ll be happy with your porcelain veneers either.
I would look around for someone who has more expertise in cosmetic dentistry. I’d ask about their post-graduate training in cosmetic dentistry as well as to see their smile gallery, so you can get an idea of how artistic they are.
You can still go to see your dentist for general dentistry, but it doesn’t sound like he has the artistry necessary for cosmetic dentistry.
