I’m thinking of getting a tongue ring, but my mom is worried it will cause problems on my teeth. I think it won’t. After all, it’s on my tongue not my teeth.
Which of us is right?

The truth is, the anytime you’re wearing your tongue ring it will be like playing whack-a-mole with your teeth. You’re going to end up with chips in your teeth. Some teeth can even get traumatized enough to need a root canal treatment. Other risks include infection, bad breath, and gum disease.
You may have your heart set on getting a tongue ring. If that is the case, you will need to have a great cosmetic dentist. For the chips, he or she can use dental bonding to fix them. You could also get porcelain veneers, but that will be much more expensive and , though the veneers are stronger than teeth, you have no guarantees you will not chip of of them also.
You’ll just have to ask yourself if you’re willing to take the risks.
