I want to get my teeth whitened, but don’t want to end up like some of those newscasters on TV that look like they have atomic teeth. Can you whiten them without looking like that?

You can definitely avoid atomic teeth. I recommend you do at home teeth whitening. I don’t mean use over-the-counter products. There is a way to do professional teeth whitening at home. Your dentist can provide you all the materials you need and can give you instructions. Doing it at home gives you more control over the level of whitening you acheive.
Once the teeth are as white as you want them, you can simply stop whitening. Those who get the super white levels you see on TV generally do as much whitening as possible.
Just so you know, whitening will only work on natural teeth. If you have any dental work that you want whitened, you’ll have to have it re-done to match your teeth after you’ve gotten them the shade you want.
