I’m a stuntman. I don’t know what’s going on with me at work lately but I’ve lost three teeth in the last few months. If this keeps up I won’t have any left. Would dental implants work for me to replace them or should I get a removable denture?
Wayne B.
Dear Wayne,
You have a fascinating job which requires a great deal of bravery. I’m amazed at the things you do. To answer your question, dental implants are a fantastic tooth replacement option. In fact, currently, it’s the top of the line.
However, they’re no more hearty than your natural teeth. Ideally, you’d want to find out what’s going on with your accidents. If you’re losing more teeth than normal and your technique in your stunts hasn’t changed, I’d check that your teeth are healthy. Gum disease weakens your teeth. It’s possible you need to strengthen them with some additional dental care.
I’d also make sure you’re wearing a mouth guard. In your line of work, I wouldn’t just purchase a drug store sport’s mouth guard. You take more impact than most. Have your dentist custom design one for your specific bite. That will be more effective in protecting your teeth.
Why Dental Implants over Dentures
I know you mentioned dentures as an option. I’m hoping you meant removable partial dentures and weren’t considering removing all of your teeth and wearing full dentures. That will be totally destructive of your jawbone, which you start losing the moment you remove your teeth.
Removable partial dentures can replace a few missing teeth, but be careful. In your line of work, I’d worry that it would become a choking hazard. They’re removable by nature and I’d think the forces you encounter thrust your jaw about quite a bit.
I hope this helps you make some important decisions and that your juju improves soon.
